William Camden, Herald, Antiquary and Historian

Unknown Artist

National Gallery of Art

This print shows a man from the waist up, holding a small book in both hands. He has pale skin, a white mustache, a pointed white beard, a long nose, deep-set eyes, and thin lips set in a slight smile. He wears a black cap over the top of his head and a long-sleeved black garment with a high ruffled collar and white cuffs at his wrists. The area around him is filled with dark, crosshatched lines surrounded by an oval frame. Beyond the frame are the shapes of bugs, flowers, vines, and small, foxlike animals. Latin text surrounds the portrait's oval frame and additional text is below in a square border surrounded by scrollwork and small columns.
