Sigismund Bathori, Prince of Transylvania

Aegidius Sadeler II

National Gallery of Art

The image is an engraving depicting the upper torso and head of a man in the center of an ornate oval frame. The man has a stern expression, a pointed mustache, and short, curly hair. He wears a detailed garment with patterns and a sash across his chest. On either side of the man are two allegorical female figures; one wearing a helmet and standing on a sphere, the other holding a cornucopia. Both figures seem to support the frame. Above the man is an eagle with outstretched wings holding an olive branch, set against clouds and rays of light. At the base of the frame are two smaller heads facing opposite directions, surrounded by decorative elements. The background is adorned with symbols and decorative elements.
