Christus am Kreuz (The Crucifixion)

Lovis Corinth

National Gallery of Art

This is a painting of a crucifixion scene. The central figure is portrayed with arms outstretched in a crucifixion pose in a monochromatic black and white scheme. The illustration depicts a halo surrounding the head of the central figure. To the left and right, two additional figures are present, each rendered with sharp lines. The figures are surrounded by a background of abstract lines, enhancing the intensity of the composition. This is in the style of Emil Nolde, known for his expressionist approach to religious subjects and use of woodcut techniques.
