Vox Dei, by Thomas Scott

Attributed to Crispijn de Passe I

National Gallery of Art

The image shows a full-body depiction of a bearded man with long hair. He is positioned centrally in the composition with his eyes closed and a calm expression. He is wearing a flowing robe and his arms are extended downwards, holding a triangular structure. Inside the triangle are several smaller portraits of individuals. Two full-length figures, seemingly younger men, are depicted at the bottom corners of the triangle, both wearing elaborate historical clothing. Below the triangle is a scene with skeletal figures and grim imagery. The background features celestial elements, swirling clouds above, architectural details on the sides, and inscriptions. Symbolic imagery such as a lion and another mythical creature can be seen at the far sides of the composition.
