Eye Mill in Suffolk

Attributed to John Sell Cotman

National Gallery of Art

The image shows a pencil drawing of a hilltop with a windmill. The windmill is dominant in the scene, seen slightly below and to the right, allowing a view upwards and towards its side. The horizon line is low, placing the windmill against a mostly clear sky with birds in flight. The artist used varying pressure of pencil strokes to create texture and depth. The color palette is mainly pale gray tones on cream paper. In the distance, there is a small structure and a grazing animal, adding to the sense of space and scale within the landscape.
