Marina Piccola, Capri

William Stanley Haseltine

National Gallery of Art

This painting shows a coastal scene with wooden rowboats on a sandy, rocky shore. A white cloth and several ropes rest on the boat in the center, and two other boats are in a row behind it. On the left, brown stone structures are partially visible, with one in the background appearing to have been carved out of a rocky formation. A small figure is visible atop this structure, tending to what may be a clothesline. The rocks stretch across the painting, with some areas of bright, green-blue ocean visible around them. Small boats appear to sail on the water far in the distance. The light blue sky dominates the upper half of the painting, filled with puffy white clouds.
