Achilles Taking Leave of Thetis and Chiron

Mantuan or Ferrarese 16th Century

National Gallery of Art

The image shows a round, bronze medallion with a relief scene depicting multiple human figures and a centaur. On the left side, there is a centaur carrying a branch or staff. In the center, two human figures are embracing. To the right, two standing human figures are depicted; one is holding a staff, and the other is wrapped in a garment. A small dog and some foliage are visible on the ground. The medallion is predominantly bronze with variations in tone due to the relief work. There is a hole near the top of the medallion, possibly for hanging.
