Heraclius I in a Car Drawn by Three Horses [reverse]

Parisian 15th Century

National Gallery of Art

The sculpture on the round medallion shows a scene with a chariot being pulled by two horses. A figure sits in the chariot, wearing what looks like a crown or elaborate headdress. There is another smaller figure in front guiding the horses. An inscription encircles the medallion. The sculpture is made of a gold or bronze-colored metal. It is intricately carved in raised relief. There is a hole near the top of the medallion.
