Jean Viret, died 1583, Scholar and Mathematician

French 16th Century

National Gallery of Art

The sculpture is a relief of an older man on a circular medallion. He is depicted wearing a fur coat and a hat. The man has pronounced facial features and a stern expression. The sculpture is made of bronze. There is a small hole near the top of the medallion. On either side of the figure, there are inscriptions, with the left side reading "IOANNES" and the right side having more writing, partially visible. The artwork is intricately detailed in its depiction of the man's clothing and facial features.
