Griffin, Ducally Gorged, in a Landscape [reverse]

Bernardo Rantwyck

National Gallery of Art

The image shows a circular bronze medallion with a relief sculpture of a griffin - a mythical creature combining features of a lion and an eagle. The griffin is depicted in a seated position with raised wings, its body and facial features finely detailed. The medallion is dark bronze with some green patination. Along the edge, there is a raised inscription in Latin, partially obscured. The object appears historical, aged, and textured.
