Pride

Pieter van der Heyden after Pieter Bruegel the Elder

National Gallery of Art

This is a print showing a chaotic scene featuring strange creatures and oddly-shapes structures. Some of the structures in the background seem to emit smoke or vapor, as do some hills behind them. The creatures that fill the scene seem to have a combination of human and animal characteristics and exaggerated proportions. Several of the creatures seem to be looking at their reflections in mirrors of different sizes, and many also appear to be grooming themselves or others. To the right of center, a peacock walks alongside several of these creatures. At the bottom of the print are several lines of text.
