Christ on the Road to Emmaus

American 18th Century

National Gallery of Art

This is a painting of three men standing closely together on a brown dirt path between two bodies of water. The men are walking towards us, looking at one another. The central figure has long hair, a mustache, and a beard, and is wearing a pink robe. To his left, a man with short brown hair wears a brown robe with a blue cloak, a cane at his side. To the right, a man with curly brown hair and a beard wears a brown cap and a light brown robe with a blue cloak. All three men have light skin and are barefoot. The path they walk on is lined by a dilapidated wooden fence, and behind them are tall trees and brown rocks. In the distance on the right, past the water, are pale green hills with red-roofed buildings under a cloudy sky.
