Emperor Maximilian I in the Guise of Saint George

Daniel Hopfer

National Gallery of Art

The image displays a man in profile from the waist up. He is standing sideways with his hands together, one hand resting on the other, and looking forward. His facial features are strong, with a prominent nose and chin, and he has shoulder-length hair beneath a broad hat. The man wears a robe with a rich fur-like texture and a collar adorned with small carved figures. Surrounding him are angelic figures, one holding a banner and another supporting a shield. The background features stylized clouds and mountains. An ornate staff is inset at the bottom near the man. There is a faint circular halo or disc outlined behind his head.
