Entry of Monseigneur Henry de Lorraine, Marquis de Moy, under the Name of Pirandre

Jacques Callot

National Gallery of Art

This is a drawing of a creature with soldiers on its back. The illustration portrays a large, mythical animal with the body of an elongated beast, bearing resemblance to a dragon or sea-serpent, with a lizard-like head and clawed feet. Atop its back, there are armored soldiers holding upright spears and shields. The soldiers are drawn in classical armor, reminiscent of Roman or ancient warriors, complete with plumed helmets. The creature's elongated tail curves towards the edge of the drawing.
