Crowning of the Grand Duchess

Jacques Callot

National Gallery of Art

This is a drawing of a regal ceremony in which a figure is being crowned. The drawing depicts an elaborate scene with numerous figures gathered under a decorative canopy. Horses are present on either side of the composition, ridden by figures in heavy clothing and bearing weapons. The central figure is depicted bowing slightly to receive a crown from a figure standing beside them. The background is filled with additional figures dressed in gowns and robes within a richly detailed architectural setting. The scene captures a moment of significance with a focus on the intricate costumes, expressions, and gestures of those present.
