Saint Valentine

Tyrolean 16th Century

National Gallery of Art

The image shows a man dressed in ornate, ecclesiastical attire, standing with his body slightly turned to the side, reading from a book. His facial features are European with delicate eyes, and his hair is medium brown, curling slightly beneath a detailed mitre adorned with crosses. He wears a richly decorated robe of deep red and gold, with white garments visible at the collar and hem, and a large brooch on his chest. A tall, ornate crozier is beside him, designed with gold-colored metalwork. At the bottom of the image, a small figure kneels in prayer, wearing black clothing with a ruffled collar and holding a red rosary. Another smaller figure is partially visible at the feet of the main subject. The background features a dark tapestry-like texture.
