River at the Foot of a High Rock

Allart van Everdingen

National Gallery of Art

This image is a landscape etching with a high horizon. A rocky formation with building-like structures is in the upper-middle portion. The etching uses fine lines, cross-hatching for texture, and a monochromatic color palette. In the lower section, a river is visible with figures near a boat. Rolling hills and a distant structure with a pointed roof are seen beyond the river. In the middle, a watermill and buildings are nestled among trees. The composition conveys a scene of a settlement blending with its landscape.
