Temples of Juno, Lucina, and Concordia - Agrigentum, Sicily

Thomas Cole

National Gallery of Art

The image shows an elevated view of a rugged landscape with a low horizon. The sky occupies the upper two-thirds of the image. Two ancient columns, partially broken and weathered, are on a rocky outcrop to the right. Loose and sketch-like brushstrokes depict outlines and shades. The color palette is subdued, mainly soft earth tones and beige. In the distance, an ancient temple-like structure can be seen, adding depth to the composition. The rocks and vegetation cascading down the slope are depicted with light and dark contrasts.
