Wooded Landscape with Travelers

Adam Pynacker

National Gallery of Art

The painting shows a forested landscape from an elevated angle. The horizon is high in the composition, with a blue sky and fluffy white clouds in the background. A large, gnarled tree trunk is in the center, with more tall trees behind it, their leaves in shades of dark green and rusty red. In the bottom left corner, we can see a group of people gathered on the dark brown ground. They are in shadow, but we can see their clothes, which are in shades of red, brown, black, and white. Three of them wear wide-brimmed hats, while the fourth appears to be a woman with her hair pulled back in a bun. More people are visible in the distance on the right, wearing similar clothing. In the center, behind the tall tree trunk, a light brown path curves up a hill and into the woods in the distance.
