Hamlet and Ophelia (Act III, Scene I)

Eugène Delacroix

National Gallery of Art

This print shows two people in a room. The man on the left is standing with his back to us and his head turned toward the right, looking over his shoulder. He has pale skin and short, wavy dark hair, and he is wearing a tunic and tight-fitting pants, a sword hanging from his waist. His right hand is outstretched towards the woman seated next to him. The woman is on the right, her body facing the left and her head angled slightly downward. She has pale skin and long, dark hair in a braid behind her head, and she wears a long gown with voluminous sleeves, a necklace, and earrings. Her hands rest in her lap. In the background there is an ornate piece of furniture, perhaps a cabinet, and a window in the upper-right corner. The room around the two people is shadowy.
