Madonna and Child with Saint Elizabeth and Saint John the Baptist

Jacopino del Conte

National Gallery of Art

This painting shows four people: two adult women and two young children. On the left is a woman with pale skin and reddish-brown hair tied up with an orange cloth. She wears a bright pink gown that drapes over her body and is tied with a dark ribbon around her waist. She holds a nude child on her lap. The child also has light skin and reddish-brown hair. Both the woman and child have pale golden halos behind their heads, and they look to the right, towards the other woman. This woman is older, with tan skin and thin gray hair under a black and white cloth. She wears green and brown robes and holds a white cloth in her hands as she kneels and looks up at the woman in pink. She also has a golden halo around her head. In front of her is another nude child with curly brown hair who carries a thin golden cross balanced on their shoulder. This child kneels by the bottom right corner by a small fire and faces away from us. The ground is gray, and behind the women is black, with a dark column faintly visible on the right side.
