Revere Beach

Maurice Prendergast

National Gallery of Art

The painting shows the view of a seashore. Groups of people are gathered on the rocky outcrop along the water's edge, some standing and some sitting. Many of the people seem to be wearing dresses and holding parasols. The brushstrokes are loose and fluid, and the people are depicted in loose sections of color, including white, pink, blue, gray, and brown. Distant sailboats can be seen on the horizon on the left. The sky is depicted with broad blue swathes and hints of off-white clouds, and the rocky shore is depicted in shades of brown and gray.
