Plate 52: Four Grasshoppers

Joris Hoefnagel

National Gallery of Art

There are four grasshoppers of various colors inside a circular frame. The largest is a brown grasshopper positioned at the top left with long, thin legs. Below it, near the bottom left, is another brown grasshopper, slightly smaller and more streamlined. A bright green grasshopper is to the right of the center, and the smallest is a vibrant pink grasshopper situated to the right. The background is off-white, allowing the colors of the grasshoppers to stand out distinctly. The composition is neat with the grasshoppers evenly spaced within the circle, and each distinctly visible against the plain background.
