Plate 48: Ten Crabs

Joris Hoefnagel

National Gallery of Art

The image shows various crabs arranged within an oval frame. The color palette includes pink, brown, blue, and cream. Some crabs are large and positioned at the bottom, with two facing forward and one with raised claws. Smaller crabs are scattered in the top half, with a notable blue crab to the right of the center. Each crab is enclosed in a beige outlined oval on a light blue sea background. "CANCER LEPOREM" is inscribed at the top, and the number 'XXXVIII' is at the bottom right of the oval.
