Plate 5: Three Catfish, a Salmon, and Two Other Fish

Joris Hoefnagel

National Gallery of Art

The image shows several fish within an oval frame. The color palette includes shades of blue, brown, gray, and hints of pinkish-orange against a light blue background that represents water. In the upper part of the frame are the largest fish. In the upper left corner, a large brown catfish with barbels can be seen, with a darker catfish to the right. In the center, there is a spotted gray fish. Below, a pale fish with a red-tinged fin is slightly left of center, with a small golden fish to its right. At the bottom, a blue fish with a pronounced dorsal fin is positioned on both sides of the frame's curvature.
