Plate 31: Duck, Merganser, and Three Goldfinches

Joris Hoefnagel

National Gallery of Art

This is a painting of various species of birds in a natural landscape. Two ducks are shown by a body of water in a grassy area. Above them, three smaller birds are perched on a branch with a pear. The image is framed in an oval shape, set against a plain background. Botanical illustrations of plants are on the left side of the frame. Latin text is inscribed at the top, and a Roman numeral "XXXI" is marked in the lower right corner. The style is reminiscent of Audubon.
