Plate 57: Scarlet Macaw with Two Smaller Green Parrots

Joris Hoefnagel

National Gallery of Art

This is a painting of three parrots perched on branches. The composition features three brightly colored parrots, each sitting on separate branches that converge in the center of the image. The parrot in the middle is larger and more prominently displayed, with vivid red plumage and striking blue and green accents on its wings and tail. To the left, a smaller parrot displays a combination of yellow, blue, and red hues, while the parrot on the right has similar yet softer color tones, predominantly green with touches of red and yellow. The background is minimal. The text "Senex Psittacus Negligit Ferlax" is inscribed at the top of the painting.
