Plate 67: Two Doves beneath a Gourd and Apples

Joris Hoefnagel

National Gallery of Art

Two birds are perched on a slender branch across the lower part of a central oval, with their bodies facing right. One bird is dark blue and green, while the other is beige. Above them, a larger branch arches across the top, bearing two red apples and a yellow, striped gourd hanging to the right. The color palette features natural browns of the branches, vibrant red and green of the apples, yellow of the gourd, and varied bird plumage colors, against a white background. The apples occupy the upper left of center, and the gourd hangs in the upper right. In the middle left of the frame, there is a small bird perched on the branch just below the apples.
