A Bearded Man and a Man in Profile [verso]

Paul Gauguin

National Gallery of Art

The image includes two partial sketches of men's faces and handwritten text. The first sketch, at the top right, shows about half of a man's face with a bowed head, downward curved eyebrows, a full beard, a short haircut, and a hat. The second sketch, below the first, is a side profile of another man with a prominent nose, pointed chin, neatly combed back hair, a thin mustache, and a collared garment. The sketches are surrounded by handwritten numbers and words, resembling a list or calculations, in faded pencil script. The background is plain and untextured, similar to aged paper.
