Four Studies of Breton Women; Shapes and Vases [verso]

Paul Gauguin

National Gallery of Art

This is a drawing of various studies and sketches. On the left, there is a collection of sketches of human profiles and partial clothing, including hats or bonnets. At the top is a study of arm and garment textures, focusing on folds and fabric draping. On the right, there are abstract shapes, simplified forms, and graphic doodles, some with handwritten notations in a foreign language. The drawings have a rough, exploratory quality.
