Church Tower; A Sketch of a Fan [recto]

Paul Gauguin

National Gallery of Art

The image shows two sketches on separate panels. On the left panel, there is a sketch of a tall, slender structure resembling a church steeple or tower. The spire extends upwards, slightly off-center to the left. A small, ambiguous shape is near the lower third of the panel to the right. The right panel features abstract, faint lines indicating a figure in the upper part and a semicircular form with a vague human shape inside in the lower part. The sketches are minimalistic, rendered with light, precise strokes. The overall color palette is monochromatic, with the natural tone of the paper dominant.
