Arlequin pleurant

François Joullain after Claude Gillot

National Gallery of Art

The image shows an individual posing as a harlequin character. The person is standing with one leg slightly forward, the right arm bent upwards and hand touching the nose. They wear a mask with exaggerated eyebrows and a large mustache, a soft hat, a fitted jacket, baggy pants with a sash at the waist, and slipper-like shoes. A bat or wooden paddle is tucked into the sash. In the background, sketched foliage and a lightly clouded sky are visible.
