An Ape in Purple with a Sick Man, a Good Man, and a Miser [fol. 36 verso]

French early 16th Century

National Gallery of Art

This painting depicts an allegorical scene with a reclining figure on a bed, a tree bearing fruit, and three clothed figures. The scene includes a nude figure on a bed draped with flowing fabric labeled "Eger", a tree with fruit, a figure in red holding a basket, and two figures in robes with labels "Avarus" and "In Virtute Fortis." At the bottom, there is a Latin inscription. The illustration combines figurative elements with a possible satirical or allegorical theme. This artwork is reminiscent of the Renaissance period like Albrecht Dürer's style.
