Abundance and the Face of a Lion, from the Villa Pamphili

Jacques-Louis David

National Gallery of Art

This is a drawing of a seated figure on a throne. The figure is draped in flowing robes and is seated on a chair or throne with an ornate design visible on its sides. Adjacent to the right arm of the figure is an accessory that resembles a vase or urn with smoke or a small flame emerging from it. Above the figure's head, there is a rough sketch of a profile of a face. The lines are primarily executed in a monochromatic scheme, with soft gray shading to indicate depth and volume.
