Still Life with Tulips

Peter Binoit

National Gallery of Art

This painting shows a bouquet of various colorful flowers bursting out of a glass vase. Two large red and cream tulips are at the top of the bouquet, surrounded by smaller flowers in red, blue, white, pale yellow, and pale purple. Some flowers are drooping over the top of the vase, and a few green leaves and pink buds have fallen to the table below. The glass vase is packed with the long green stems of the flowers, giving it a green appearance. The vase rests on a light gray table, and there is a red and black beetle on the left. A small blue snail with a white shell is visible on the right, crawling along the far edge of the table. The wall behind the flowers is black.
