Hendrick Goltzius

Jonas Suyderhoff after Pieter Claesz Soutman

National Gallery of Art

The image shows a man facing slightly to the right but looking directly at the viewer. He has prominent facial features with a high forehead, deep-set eyes, a long nose, and a full beard. He wears a cap over his hair and a collared garment that seems like a cloak over a shirt. The oval frame around the portrait is ornate with cherubic figures, fruits, and drapery. Cherubic figures at the top hold a wreath and a crest inscribed "EER BOVEN GOLT." Additional cherubic figures and a scroll with a Latin inscription are at the bottom of the frame. The background is abstract and textured.
