The image depicts a round bronze medal featuring a relief sculpture. The sculpture shows a female figure on a pedestal extending a laurel wreath to a smaller male figure to her left who is holding an object. There is a younger male figure looking up towards the woman. Behind the female figure is a large shield. The medal is inscribed with "AMERICAN ART UNION" above the figures and "1847" below them, with further text beneath the date.
