Tommaso Marino, Duke of Terranova, 1475-1572 [obverse]

Pier Paolo Galeotti

National Gallery of Art

The image shows a circular bronze medal or coin with a raised profile portrait of a bearded man in profile, facing to the right. The man is depicted in a traditional style with detailed engraving, showcasing curly hair and a prominent beard. He is dressed in a high-collared garment. Surrounding the portrait is an inscription reading "THOMAS MARINVS DVX TERRAE NOVAE". The material of the coin is bronze, evident from its dark brown color with areas of a lighter coppery sheen. The overall appearance of the medal is an intricately designed small-scale sculpture in the form of a commemorative or historical coin. A small round hole is present at the top.
