He is dressed in a dark coat with a light-colored waistcoat and a light gray cravat. Both people have pale skin. On the desk are several books, papers, and writing implements, including ink and a wax seal. The man is holding a quill pen in one hand and turning the page of a book with the other. The background features pale greenish drapery and a wooden paneled wall with what looks like a map hanging on the right.
