Jewelry Design with a Lion's Head

Jean Toutin

National Gallery of Art

This is a drawing of an emblem with intricate detailing. The top half of the image shows a shield-like design with floral patterns in a symmetrical arrangement, bordered by tendrils, and crowned by a stylized lion or beast's head. Below the central motif, there are two figures in elaborate historical costumes. The figure on the left wears a cap with a hanging tassel and distinctive spectacles, holding an open book. The figure on the right wears a feathered hat, looking back at the other figure and holding an object that resembles an abacus or a ladder. The year 1619 is inscribed near the bottom of the image.
