The Crucifixion

Annibale Carracci

National Gallery of Art

The image depicts a man nailed to a wooden cross in an upright position. His arms are outstretched and nailed at the wrists to the horizontal beam, while his feet are overlapped and nailed to the vertical post. The man is muscular, wearing a loincloth, a crown of thorns on his head, and shoulder-length curly hair. His facial features include a beard and a downward gaze. There is an inscription above his head on the cross in various languages. At the foot of the cross, there are skulls and bones. The background shows a cloudy sky with distant buildings or structures on the horizon.
