Jesus Christ Appearing to Saint Roch

Paulus Pontius, after Sir Peter Paul Rubens

National Gallery of Art

The image depicts a group of figures in a classical style art. The central figure on the upper level is a man standing with arms raised, looking upwards while an angelic figure gestures towards him. The man's hair is curly and he has a beard. He wears a loose cloth draped around him, partially covering his body. Next to him, a divine figure with radiant light behind him extends an arm toward the man. To the left is a cherub-like figure holding a scroll. Below them, there is a scene with multiple figures in various poses of distress or prayer. A man on the left is kneeling, with another figure beside him reaching upwards, an elderly man at the center is also extending his arms upwards. To the right, a man and a woman are seated on the ground, with the man looking upwards and the woman leaning on him with a gaze directed at the central figures above. The figures are partially draped in cloth, their expressions adding to the dramatic composition. The background features arch-like structures which provide a sense of depth to the scene. At the top of the image, there is a dog that appears to be resting next to a walking stick and a hat. The setting appears to be both outdoors, given the presence of clouds and sky, and within a structured environment, with the architectural elements framing the scene.
