Campagna di Roma

Edward Lear

National Gallery of Art

The image displays a landscape seen from an elevated perspective. On the left side, there are ruins of a structure with an arched doorway and tall trees. In the distance, mountains rise with a series of arches, possibly an aqueduct, running horizontally. The horizon is in the top third of the image. The artist used a wash technique with soft brushstrokes. The color palette is limited to shades of gray, accentuating light and shadow.
