View across a Bay (Monaco)

Edward Lear

National Gallery of Art

The image features a landscape seen from an elevated perspective. The horizon is positioned about a third of the way down from the top, with a cliffside extending into the distance. There are structural elements resembling buildings or ruins. The brushstrokes are loose and impressionistic, capturing the scenery with fluid strokes. The color palette is monochromatic, using shades of gray to create contrasts and depth. Closest to us are trees framed by dark, broad brushstrokes on the right, with more nebulous forms on the left. The landscape transitions into rocky terrain and the cliff, creating depth towards the horizon.
