Vanitas, Vanitatum et Omnia Vanitas

Jan Pietersz Saenredam, after Abraham Bloemaert

National Gallery of Art

The image features a woman seated in a reclined position from head to knees. She gazes to the right with delicate facial features, curly hair partly covered by flowing headgear or fabric with wing-like elements. She wears a draped garment exposing her shoulders and upper chest, and is interacted with objects on a table: a rod, smoking container, ornate vessels, and a candle-like object. Swirling clouds or smoke form the background, and the scene is encircled by a decorative calligraphic border.
