Entrance to the Winter Palace, Pekin, October 29, 1860

Felice Beato

National Gallery of Art

The image shows a large traditional building on the right side of the frame. The horizon is low in the image, with a line of trees and a long, low wall. Two tall, ornate columns are on the left, each crowned with decorative finials. Close to us is a grassy area leading to a paved section bordered by a stone balustrade. The middle of the image is dominated by the building's textured wall and intricate architectural details of its upper levels. The color palette is a monochrome sepia tone.
