The Layette

Theodore Robinson

National Gallery of Art

This painting shows a woman seated on a wooden chair outside. She is turned to the left, and we see her in profile. She holds a white cloth in her hands and looks down at it. The woman has pale skin and dark hair styled in a bun on the top of her head, and her legs are crossed. She wears a dress with a white bodice and pink skirt. There is a small hoop earring in her ear and a bracelet on her wrist. On the ground by her feet is another piece of white fabric. She sits by a large tree on the right side of the painting and is surrounded by green leaves and yellow grass. Small areas of blue sky are visible through the canopy of leaves above her. Behind her, the roof and side of a building are visible.
