Harvard College Bookplate with the Christo et Ecclesiæ Seal

Nathaniel Hurd

National Gallery of Art

This is a drawing of an ornate bookplate. The design features a heraldic shield with an inscription in Latin around it. Above the shield, there are stacks of books with a radiant sun with a face. On either side of the shield, there are intricate floral and scroll patterns with small globes positioned on pedestals. Below the shield, there is a draped banner with the word "Thorndike" and the year "1818." At the bottom, the artist's name, "N. Hurd Sc." and the location "BOSTON" are inscribed. The design is detailed and symmetrical.
