A Lady of Cairo Visiting

James David Smillie, after Frederic Arthur Bridgman

National Gallery of Art

This is a drawing of a street scene in front of an elaborately decorated building. The scene depicts architectural details and natural elements surrounding the figures. In the image, a white donkey stands on the left with its tack accentuated. Next to a detailed arched doorway, there are two people cloaked in long robes; one is leaning against the building while another is seated on the ground with bowls. The stone building features carvings around the doorframe and latticework on its balconies and windows. The shading and crosshatching techniques bring out the textures of stone and fabric, casting a warm glow over the scene.
