Studies of a Man's Head

John Singer Sargent

National Gallery of Art

This drawing is a sketch showing two profile views of a person's head and neck. On the left, the person is shown in a right-facing profile with their chin slightly tilted downward. Their eyes are closed and their expression is neutral. Their hair appears short and closely cropped to their head. On the right, the same person is seen in a left-facing profile with their chin slightly lifted and their eyes looking upward. In both profiles, they have deeply-set eyes, high cheekbones, arched eyebrows, a sharp nose, and full lips. Both of the sketches are near the top of the paper, and the background is plain.
